This past weekend, NASCAR came to San Diego for the first time, in partnership with the U.S. Navy at its base in Coronado. Carvana had a front row seat as a proud sponsor of seven-time Cup Series champion and Legacy Motor Club owner Jimmie Johnson for both Friday’s Craftsman Truck Series race and Sunday’s Anduril 250.
But the weekend extended well beyond the track. Carvana, Jimmie Johnson, and Legacy Motor Club also collaborated to honor veterans of the armed forces in the spirit of the Navy-hosted race and to bring financial support and advocacy to students in San Diego and across the country who are pursuing careers in the auto industry.
For Jimmie, it was a homecoming. For Carvana, it was an opportunity to show up for communities and causes that matter to us.
In the Shop
Members of CarVets, Carvana’s veteran-focused employee resource group, joined Legacy Motor Club Car Chief Jeremy West and Crew Chief and LMC Technical Director Chad Johnston for a visit to San Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE). SDCCE’s Automotive Certificate Program creates student pathways to auto industry jobs through hands-on learning with state-of-the-art equipment — and every program is tuition-free.
The group toured the shop, led a presentation on career paths at Carvana and Legacy Motor Club and announced a $20,000 donation to directly support graduating students with certifications, testing fees, and other costs between graduation and landing a first job in the industry.
Graduating students also got passes to join the team on race day!
On the Track
On Friday, Jimmie lined up for the Craftsman Truck Series race before returning to the No. 84 Carvana Toyota Camry XSE for Sunday’s Anduril 250. The car’s paint scheme paid tribute to Jimmie’s childhood in Southern California and the military hosts of NASCAR’s San Diego debut.
On Sunday, SDCCE graduates, members of CarVets, and others from team Carvana got in on the action, enjoying the race together from the roar of the stands to the action of the pit. In a moment that felt right for the weekend, Jimmie and the CarVets also exchanged challenge coins, a meaningful tradition in both military and motorsport culture.
Driving Brighter Futures
To close out the weekend, Carvana and the Jimmie Johnson Foundation announced the launch of Driving Brighter Futures — a grant program for public school automotive and engineering Career Technical Education (CTE) programs nationwide. This year’s grant will award one deserving program with funding for whatever they need most, whether that’s new tools, updated curriculum, or vehicles for students to work on. Nominations are open through Aug. 28, 2026.
To nominate a deserving school, visit the Jimmie Johnson Foundation website.
It was a full weekend, in every sense. We’re proud to have been part of it.
