High school pickleball is still finding its footing. Cory Newton has spent years helping build it.
A teacher and coach at Mountain View High School in Mesa, Arizona, Newton worked to establish pickleball as a permanent part of high school athletics. He mentors student-athletes at every skill level, has advocated for the sport’s official sanctioning, and this season led Arizona’s first certified state pickleball tournament, bringing together more than 30 high schools.
On May 9, Carvana and the PPA Tour recognized Cory Newton at the Toys “R” Us PPA Finals in San Clemente. He was honored on court and received $35,000 toward a vehicle purchase from Carvana.

The Driving Pickleball Forward Award recognizes individuals expanding access, visibility, and inclusion in pickleball communities nationwide. This year’s recipient was selected by a panel of six experts and a combined fan vote.
